Smiths Falls Triathlon Race Report

Smiths Falls Sprint Triathlon
Date: June 24th, 2007
Distance: swim 500m, bike 26km, run 5km

Warm up/ pre-race:
Went well, I found a good t-zone spot (had a very easy identifiable big tree right next to my bike). I did about 10min run with a couple of pick ups to get my HR up. Then out on the bike for 15min with a high cadence. Back to the t-zone and my hat had disappeared! I had it on the run warm up, someone must have taken it by mistake. Fortunately I had a spare visor for the race. I put my wetsuit on and went down to the water for a good warm up. Only problem was they were letting two boats through the locks, so everyone had to wait until the boats had passed through the locks. After the boats I was able to get a warm up, but I think I would like to do a longer warm up in the future as I probably had only 5mins total.

Swim:
The swim went well (for me), I went out pretty fast trying to hold on to a pair of feet. Got to the turn-around and I swallowed a big mouthful of water and had to take a couple of breaststrokes to catch my breath, then it was heads down to the finish. Looked at my watch when I stood up: 5:34 (ok that must have been a short swim)
T1:
I took the wetsuit off at the bike, which seemed to work better than in the past when I tried to take the whole wetsuit of in the water. On to the bike, I fiddled a little to long getting my feet into the shoes (already clipped into the pedals) and I didn’t get them into the shoes and straps tightened until well after the turn onto River St. It turns out I forgot to bodyglide the heals of my shoes.
Bike:
Went out with a high cadence 100RPM+ and tried to keep that for most of the ride. I really liked the new course, Kilmarnock island section was very nice and the way back had some nice rollers. Things went well and was passing enough people from the waves before me, but I was passed by a couple of 40-44 age groupers (the age group behind me).
T2:
Everything went good except the toggle lock came off my laces and that cost me 30secs or so putting it back on.
Run:
Run felt great, I tried to keep a nice high cadence up the hills in the first part of the course. I like the run course, hilly on the first section then all down hill on the final 2km! I managed to pass a good amount of people on the run.

Times:
Swim: 5:34
T1: 2:26 (should have ran faster up the t-zone)
Bike: 43:17
T2: 0:58
Run: 18:45
Total time 1:10:36
32nd overall 5/17 in age group 30-34

Pictures here

Thoughts:
This was my first triathlon ever back in 2004 and my first time back at this race since then. I managed to improve on my time from 2004 (even with the extra 6km on bike) and go sub 20 on the run which where my two goals for this race.
There are a lot of fast people that do this race!
I really liked the loop course (as apposed to an out and back) and the run course is great as well.

That is all for now
Take care

June 16, 2007 The Greatest Day Ever (according to Keir)

As the title suggests Saturday June 16th 2007 was the greatest days ever (for Keir). We took Keir to the Thomas the Tank Engine Live Show at Scotia Bank Place.

Keir had a blast and mommy and daddy enjoyed themselves(as much as you can with 1000+ screaming kids). There was lots of signing and audience inter-action which Keir really got into.

This first pic is Keir and I outside of the arena.

The second photo is of one anxious little boy waiting for the show to start. He was very patient considering what he was waiting for!

The third photo is mommy and Keir... waiting ... yes we were a little early :-)

The fourth photo is of the Stage... this was the only picture we were permited to take as soon as the show started they started "enforcing" the no picture policy :-(

I ran the NCM on May 27th 207
Here is my race report, there are some pics below from Bill Johnson:
Morning up at 4:45 and rammed in my normal breakfast, had a difficult time finishing my normal breakfast. Parked at World exchange and made the short walk over to the starting area.
Weather was cool and overcast at the start of the race, I saw the start of the wheelchair race, there seemed to be under ten racers, don’t know if that is normal or not. Then it was off for a very quick warm up on Laurier up over the bridge to get the heart rate up and then it was back to the starting corral to get ready for the start. My plan was to look for the 3:10 pace bunny and stick to him/her like glue. What do they say about the best laid plans… there was no 3:10 pace bunny that I could find! Oh well, I would just have to become my own pace bunny.
We are off, up Elgin with 3100 of my closest running friends, 1km in at 4:25 and downhill to 2km was a little fast @ 4:16. At 2km I met up with Bruce from Oshawa, he mentioned that he was shooting for 3:10 as well, and suggested we team up and work together. I am glad I met Bruce because it was great to have someone to run with for 40km and keep you on pace.
The rest of the race went well (thanks to Bruce keeping me in check). 10km in 44:35, 21.1km @ 1:33.34. Our plan was to average 4:30 pace which we did well (with the exception of a couple of up hill sections) for the first 28km, after 28km it is a deceptive climb basically to just before Dow’s lake (35km). This is where I blew up last year when I messed up my nutrition. So I focused on maintaining my pace and taken care of my nutrition before hand (Gels at 9km 18km, 27km). The section went well and I felt strong for the finish. At 36km-ish the half marathoners came onto the course and the final 6kms were quite congested but I made it through sticking to 4:30’s until the last 1km were I opened it up(as much as you can after 41km’s J) Coming down the finishing chute with all those people was fun as there seemed to be more people cheering because the ½ and full were finishing at the same time.
After I crossed the finish line I saw my mom and dad and Jen and Keir who were waiting around in the rain!
Ended up @ 3:08.58 so I was very happy. I ended up qualifying for the Boston Marathon and was 196 out of 3115 people, not a bad day.
Lessons learned:
Really focusing on even pacing worked very well for me
Eating more(even when I didn’t want to) helped me stay strong near the end
Never race by Heart Rate, HR can be influenced by other factors.
Thanks to Bruce who helped me through the 42km’s.
Thanks to my wife and son for dealing with the longs runs, running challenges, and all the other things that go into marathon training.
Thanks to Mother Nature for the perfect weather for running, cool and overcast.
Lastly thanks to all the staff and volunteers that help the racers have an enjoyable race experience.

All this stuff has been made by Keir at school. When I say made, I really mean "helped make".
At his day care they do some sort of craft every day, so you can see our "wall of Art" is getting very full, and this is only a fraction of the stuff he has brought home.

Please note is you ever try and you a pencil at our house I can guarantee two things:
1. It won't be sharpened
2. If you do sharpen it, the lead will be broken many, many times
I know this because of what Keir does to pencils in our house, as demonstrated by this picture, he plays Jedi!

Shoes!

Originally uploaded by apartment5b.
Here is a pic of my running shoes, old shoes on the right replacements on the left ;-)
The Marathon is less than a month away and I am really looking forward to it. I had a busy winter of running (i guess you can tell that by looking at the shoes). I did a little running challenge for myself and ended up runnning 103 days in a row, starting Jan first and ending April 12th or there abouts. I feel very ready for the race.
I have been forced to take 3 days of running this week as I fell during a bike ride last sunday and messed my ankle up a bit (along with leaving some skin behind on the road!)
But if I am going to be a "glass half full guy" the 3 days rest probably did me pretty good and I am ready for the final push toward the big day.

Take care

Rainy Day

Well, it is a rainy saturday here in Ottawa and Jenny is working so it is just the boys together today!
Keir and I are doing fine, it is hockey playoff season here and the SENS are onto the second round. I have been teaching Keir about the good guys (all the players on the Senators) and the bad guys (the Pittsburgh Penguins (we beat them the last round), the New Jersey Devils (current opposition) and the referees!) There is a game tonight so lets hope the Sens keep rolling!

Jenny is doing great, she had an appointment a couple of week ago and the doctor said everything looks good (so we are happy)

That is all for now...
Take care

That is too Fancy

Still slacking in the update department, but here goes:
This past weekend Keir went to his first dentist appointment. He was a little scared at first but by the end was pretty relaxed. It was a basic checkup were they counted his teeth (10 on top 10 on the bottom) and apparently braces might be in his future( I can hear the orthodontists cheering already). He is going back for his cleaning in two weeks time.

I thought I would also start to capture some of the funny/weird things Keir says, cause he is really coming up with some funny things.
This morning I was getting him dressed for daycare and tried to put a raincoat on him and he said " That jacket is too fancy, I don't want to wear it" A regular fashion critic!

That is all for now

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, don't have a real excuse just busy.
Here in Ottawa it has been very cold for the last 3 weeks (it seems like for ever) so Keir hasn't been able to get outside much, today was the first "warm day" in a while. We took the opportunity to try Keir's skates out for the first time.
Keir got the skates for Xmas and the weather is only just now co-cooperating to let Keir try skating
Here we are tying up his skates.
We spent about 15mins on the ice, Keir did well but he still needs a lot of practice, by the end he was starting to get the hand of balancing on skates.
There are more photos from the day below.

-Blowing Chunks-

Sorry for the rude title, but I am typing this in the midst of the battle field that is our basement. It looks like a war zone because Keir has thrown up over both couches in the basement. The cushions are strewn all over the place trying to dry out after being cleaned off from the throw up.
This is the first stomach flu that Keir has had and it is hitting him full force!
He is upstairs now trying to have a nap, hopefully he wakes up and the bug has past, because we don't have any couches left for him to throw up!
That is all for now
